William Byron Won't Go Quietly - "We're Hungry for More"
William Byron currently sits 18 points outside of the next playoff round. When the NASCAR Cup Series visits Bristol Motor Speedway this weekend, it will be Byron’s final chance to make up the gap.
The driver of the Hendrick Motorsports #24 Axalta Chevrolet hasn’t had much go his way during this first round of the playoffs. “We’ve had the most adversity the last two weeks that we could possibly want,” said Byron. After crashing out of Darlington, and finishing two laps down in 19th at Richmond, Byron has his work cut out for him.
Mathematically speaking, he doesn’t necessarily need to win the race at Bristol this weekend, but it would certainly make things easier. Byron says he aims to win every race, so his approach won’t be any different than any other week. “Bristol’s always tough, I feel like you’ve just got to try and score as many points as possible. There’s obviously a lot of opportunity with the stages, and with the race being as long as it is, so I feel like we’ll know where we stack up by the end of things, and have a lot of time to make a difference.”
However, in the same breath, Byron also acknowledged the unknowns of a track like Bristol, saying “It’s a very tough place to get around and feel like you can really make a difference. I’d say it’s the most unpredictable race of the round.”
This may be an eerily familiar situation to Byron’s fans, as he was eliminated from the 2020 playoffs at Bristol last year. He entered the final race of Round One with a three-point deficit to Clint Bowyer on the cutline. Reflecting on last year’s playoffs, Byron was quick to downplay similarities, saying he would “rely a little bit on past experience, but it’s a lot different than last year.”
“I think this year going in, [I’m] just trying to be aggressive. I feel like we’ll have the car this weekend, so we just have to perform and execute a good race.” Byron will try to punch his ticket to the Round of 12 Saturday at the Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race, at 7:30 pm ET.
