William Byron currently sits 18 points outside of the next playoff round.  When the NASCAR Cup Series visits Bristol Motor Speedway this weekend, it will be Byron’s final chance to make up the gap.    The driver of the Hendrick Motorsports #24 Axalta Chevrolet hasn’t had much go his way during this first round of the playoffs.  “We’ve had the most adversity the last two weeks that we could possibly want,” said Byron.  After crashing out of Darlington, and finishing two laps down in 19 th at Richmond, Byron has his work cut out for him.    Mathematically speaking, he doesn’t necessarily need to win the race at Bristol this weekend, but it would certainly make things easier.  Byron says he aims to win every race, so his approach won’t be any different than any other week.  “Bristol’s always tough, I feel like you’ve just got to try and score as many points as possible.  There’s obviously a lot of opportunity wi...

  CONCORD, N.C.   --  Hendrick Motorsports has named Rudy Fugle as the crew chief for William Byron and the No. 24 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE team for the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series season. He will join the organization in mid-November. The 36-year-old Fugle is one of the most successful crew chiefs at the NASCAR national series level. He has won two driver championships and five owner titles in the Gander RV and Outdoors Truck Series. As a crew chief for Kyle Busch Motorsports since 2013, he has recorded 28 truck victories, which tie him for the second-most in series history. Fugle will replace current No. 24 crew chief Chad Knaus,  who was recently named Hendrick Motorsports’ vice president of competition  effective at the completion of the 2020 racing season. “We’re pleased to welcome Rudy,” said Jeff Andrews, general manager of Hendrick Motorsports. “His teams have consistently performed at a championship level for many years.     Denny Hamlin wins a wild one in Talladega. In one of the most controversial finishes in NASCAR history, the double yellow line played a major impact in the finish of another Talladega race.  The entire race was sloppy in the best way possible, as the race set a new track record of 13 cautions, and only two playoff drivers finished in the top 10.     Stage 1 featured one of the messiest starts to a race I have ever seen. NASCAR had planned for a competition caution on lap 25, but NASCAR had three cautions before the competition caution.  The early race wrecks lead playoff favorites Denny Hamlin, and Kevin Harvick to ride around in the back waiting. A late stage incident involving Alex Bowman and Aric Almirola gifted Chris Buescher the stage win.      Stage 2 featured a scary wreck where Kurt Busch went airnorn, riding on the hood of Cole Custer's car. I will preview each of the 16 playoff drivers and rank them into one of four categories. The categories are a favorite, a good bet, a long shot, and save your money.      Kevin Harvick -  The regular season champion enters Bristol having already advanced to the Round of 12 via his win at Darlington. Harvick has been one of the two dominant drivers this season. Bristol however is good but not great track for him. He has three wins, and an average finish of 13.8.
