24 Days 'Til Daytona - Today's Featured Driver: Clint Bowyer

In case you missed it, StatChat is counting down the days ‘til the 2021 Daytona 500.  Every two days, we will have a new article featuring one of the Top 30 Drivers of 2020.

12th Place – Clint Bowyer – 2254 pts

By the Numbers:

4 Stage Wins – Coming into the 2020 season, Clint Bowyer had won 3 stages in his career, one in each of the previous three years.  This year, he won 4 stages, surpassing his career total.  He won both stages at Darlington 2, one at Michigan 2, and another at Texas 2.

2nd Place – Bowyer’s best finish of the year quietly came at the first Bristol Race, where he finished 2nd.  The spotlight was stolen from Clint and eventual race winner Brad Keselowski as everyone was focused on Joey Logano and Chase Elliott, who tangled with each other with 3 laps to go.

50% Finishes from 11-20th – Clint Bowyer finished outside of the Top 20 only 6 times in 2020, and finished inside the Top 10 12 times.  This means his most common finishing position was between 11th to 20th, where he finished 18 times – or 50% of the season.

6,921 Laps in Top 15 – Bowyer finished 9,441 laps in 2020, and he spent 6,921 (or 70.3%) of them in the Top 15.  A fairly consistent driver, Clint was often overshadowed by his Stewart-Haas teammate Kevin Harvick, who had an incredible season, statistically speaking.  Bowyer only managed to finish 2 races as the top Stewart-Haas driver – his 2nd place finish at Bristol, and the Daytona Road Course, where he finished 6th.

18.83 Average Finish in iRacing – When the COVID-19 pandemic halted NASCAR (and the rest of the sporting world) in March 2020, many drivers participated in the iRacing Pro Invitational Series as a way to keep the fans engaged.  Clint Bowyer had two 11th Place finishes, but also a 30thand a 33rd (although some of Bowyer’s struggles may have been due to the fact that he was simultaneously on the broadcast team while racing.  Perhaps multitasking isn’t his strong suit).

Clint Bowyer spent the last four seasons as the driver of the Stewart-Haas Racing No. 14 Ford.  It certainly came with less fanfare than fellow driver Jimmie Johnson, but Clint Bowyer announced in October of 2020 that he would be retiring from full-time NASCAR.  His infectious personality made him an obvious choice to join the Fox Sports booth in 2021 as an analyst.

Coming up in two days – Austin Dillon
