Formula One Race Recap: Hamilton takes victory in British Grand Prix

   

  After winning the very first sprint race in Formula One history on Saturday, Max Verstappen and the rest of the tour made a stop in the United Kingdom for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on Sunday. 

    The action picked up rather quickly as Lewis Hamilton and Verstappen led side-by-side thorough the majority of the first two sectors. The action ended after the two were going into Copse corner as Hamilton dived to the inside of Verstappen and touched wheels at over 180 miles-per-hour, sending the championship leader into the tire barrier with an impact the registered at 51 times the force of gravity. Thankfully, Verstappen walked away from the incident.

    After a lengthy red flag period, The race restarted with Leclerc out at the front of the grid. The Mercedes' of Hamilton and Bottas followed behind rounding out the top three. The McLaren of Norris and Riccardo completed the top five to this point. 

    Three laps after the restart, the Formula One officials gave Hamilton a 10-second penalty for causing the collision all the while Leclerc increased his lead over the field. That was until lap 15 when the Ferrari of Leclerc started to cutoff due to mapping issues on the engine, but he solved his problem and pulled clear of DRS range.

     From lap 22 to 30, the field made their one and only pit stops of the day. Lando Norris had a six-second stop as he had a right rear issue which gave Bottas third place. Hamilton stopped on lap 28 to serve his penalty. He came out behind Norris in fourth. Carlos Sainz had a twelve second stop to due a left front problem. 

    Hamilton passed Norris on lap 31 and passed Bottas on lap 41 after following team orders. Currently, Leclerc had an eight-second lead over Hamilton with twelve laps remaining. Over the next nine laps, Hamilton paced almost a second a lap faster then Leclerc. With four laps remaining, Hamilton made the pass into Copse and drove away to score his eighth British Grand Prix victory. Leclerc finished second and Bottas rounding out the podium.

     Formula One now has a two week break as the series heads to Budapest for the Hungarian Grand Prix on August 1st. Max Verstappen still holds a seven point lead over Hamilton in the championship standings. Red Bull now only has a four point lead over Mercedes in the constructor standings.
