This weekend, the Cup Series playoffs will continue at the Charlotte Roval.  It is the final race of the Round of 12, meaning four drivers will be eliminated from the Cup Series playoffs.  Chase Elliott is one of the favorites to win, having already won the last two races on the road course.    Elliott is known for his road course prowess.  His average finish at Cup road courses is the best in the series, and it’s not even close.  His 5.72 is far beyond a distant 2nd-placed Kurt Busch (12.09).  While the sample size is small at the Charlotte Roval (there have only been 3 prior races there), it seems to be a place that Elliott truly shines.    When asked why the Roval seemed to suit him so well, Elliott said, “We’ve had a good road course package for the last few years.  For whatever reason we kind of hit on a good package at Charlotte.  They’re all similar, but we tweak things here and there and landed in...

Martin Truex Jr.’s 2022 Cup Series season has had its share of ups and downs.  With three wins in his first 12 races, Truex Jr. was looking to be right behind Kyle Larson in terms of championship favorites.  Then came the summer, and with it the results dried up, leaving fans of the #19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota worried.  But there may have been a plan all along – a method to the madness.   Take a look at Martin Truex Jr.’s three regular season wins – Phoenix, Martinsville and Darlington.  Each of those are tracks that reappear in the playoffs.  It would appear the team focused all of their efforts on playoff tracks.  In fact, Truex Jr.’s average finish at non-playoff tracks was 15.00, whereas at playoff tracks he had an average finish of 8.75.    Truex Jr. wasn’t necessarily willing to confirm that this was the plan all along, instead focusing on the fact that everyone on the team seems to be firing on all cylinders ...

 I remember listening to him in old video games and auto races of the 1990s. His voice flowed like the legs of a crimson red wine, and his vocabulary was as large as William Shakespeare. Bob Jenkins was a man that I wanted to be like. He had a genuine passion for the history of American motorsports. It was reported this evening that Jenkins passed away at the age of 73.  We had Bob scheduled to be interviewed on an upcoming episode of Racing Refresh not long ago. In January he and I chatted for some time as we prepped for our planned discussion on air. He was so amused that a young fan was interested in covering his career. It was an unfortunate illness that sidelined our next time together. He touched base with us shortly thereafter and emphasized that he would need to cancel. He knew at this time what we all know. (Getty Images)  NASCAR Wire Service Race leader Austin Hill was declared the winner of Saturday’s United Rentals 176 at the famed Watkins Glen International road course after lightning in the immediate area forced the field to stop on pit road 11 laps from the scheduled race finish.   Hill had taken a 1.023-second lead over John Hunter Nemechek before the trucks headed to pit road where they waited under red flag conditions for nearly an hour before the race was officially called.   The race marked the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series regular season finale, officially setting the 10-driver 2021 Playoff field.
