And Then There Were Four - StatChat's Guide to Each Playoff Driver

Image
Become a Patron!   After the dust settled at Martinsville, four championship contenders remained:  Kyle Larson, Chase Elliott, Denny Hamlin, and Martin Truex Jr.  Depending on how this weekend’s finale at Phoenix goes, there truly is a chance for each of them.  In typical StatChat style, we’ll dive into the numbers to make the case for each driver.   Kyle Larson – Pros   Kyle Larson might just be the obvious favourite.  His 9 wins on the year (so far) lead the Cup Series by a long shot.  He has also been in the fastest car at Hendrick Motorsports, who have dominated this year as well.  Hendrick cars have accounted for 16 wins (Joe Gibbs Racing only has 9).    He hasn’t even needed to always be in the fastest car.  Before finishing 7 th at the Spring Phoenix race, Larson was the driver of the Chip Ganassi #42.  The car was certainly not a backmarker by any means, but the team was nowhere near as competitive ...

Redemption at Talladega - Darrell 'Bubba' Wallace Jr. Wins!

Image
Become a Patron! After years of ups and down for Darrell Wallace Jr., a dominating drive at the end of the second stage of NASCAR's Talladega 500 resulted in a historic moment. For only the second time in history, a black man has won at NASCAR's top level. Wallace, who has dealt with an unrequested responsibility of leading NASCAR's diversity movement, has competed in the sport since 2017. He was winless in his first 142 career cup starts, but showed underlying talent in lower divisions. In both NASCAR's Truck Series and Regional K/N East Touring series, he had a previous total of 6 wins each.  While today's event ended in rain, speed and dominance at the largest tracks in the sport are not new for the Mobile Alabama native. He has led in 4 consecutive events at Talladega and was a matter of feet away from winning the 2018 Daytona 500.  Wallace's team, newly found 23Xi (Pronounced Twenty-Three Eleven) Racing is co-owned by NASCAR elite Denny Hamlin and NBA Hall-...

Denny Hamlin Still Has Concerns About the Next-Gen Car: "We're All Going to Have to Get Comfortable"

Image
Become a Patron! It might’ve taken him a while to get to Victory Lane this year, but Denny Hamlin wasn’t able to bask in it for long.  For the first time since Next-Gen testing began, multiple vehicles were tested together on a Super Speedway.  Hamlin and seven other Cup drivers climbed into the new car at Daytona International Speedway.   One of the main takeaways from the test session was the issue of heat inside the car.  Hamlin explained, “It’s difficult, because it’s the way the car is designed, […] the exhaust is all boxed-in running right underneath the seat.  It’s 450 degrees down in that box.  It’s super hot, and then you’ve got all the exhaust, all the hot radiator flowing right into the car from the hood.”   Hamlin also pointed out that some of the teams with smaller budgets may have it worse, as they may not have access to some of the latest cooling technology.  Hamlin and the other drivers who tested with him had an air con...
